Introduction to Business for homeschoolers
Wednesdays, 11 am - 12 pm, April 6 – May 18 (7 weeks)
Danbury, CT, ages 13 and up.

Creative Learning Community co-op invites homeschooled teens to join us for a 7-week introductory business class taught by Dr. Pauline Assenza, Associate Professor of Management at WCSU. This course was specifically developed for homeschoolers with an interest in business.
It will explore the nature and scope of business, examine its component parts, and describe how business is organized and managed. Students will learn about the various internal and external forces that affect the U.S. business and economic system. A combination of lecture, class discussion and creative assignments will be used to facilitate learning.
In order to complete assignments, students will need access to the Internet, the capability of viewing online videos, and access to Excel spreadsheet software. They should also have access to a word processing program and a printer in order to submit assignments.
Objectives:
During this course, students will acquire hands-on knowledge of how businesses function – from start-up to shut-down. Through weekly exercises, students will be able to do the following:
• Explain how businesses function
• Describe the elements of the business environment
• Identify at least three indicators of economic conditions that affect business functioning
• Explain why businesses must understand how global markets affect their operations
• Explain how being socially responsible adds value to a business
• Identify key resources that are necessary for effective business functioning
• Explain how businesses monitor their performance
• Identify the special challenges faced by small businesses and entrepreneurs
• Describe how a business can fail
• Identify a business or industry that interests the student, and develop a plan for continuing to learn about this in the future
