Hello, my name is Corinne Swanson and I am the Coordinator of Youth and Family Programs at the Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford, CT. I would like to invite you to participate in our next Home School Day at CHS, our summer kick-off on Monday, June 22. These programs are specifically designed for homeschool families, offering a flexible schedule and a wide variety of activities for children of different ages.
At our summer kick-off program on June 22, families will be learning what life was like for kids during different periods in Connecticut history through self-guided, hands-on activities.
Drop in with your family any time between 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Choose one, two, or three themed activity sheets to guide your visit:
Native American Connecticut (recommended for ages 5-8)
Explore Native American childhood through hands-on activities. Play a traditional Native American game and sew your own deerskin-style bag to take home.
The Civil War (recommended for ages 7-10)
What was it like to grow up during the Civil War? Try on reproduction 19th-century clothing and search for a very special Civil War era flag.
World War II (recommended for ages 9-12)
Your grandparents or great-grandparents may remember what it was like to be a kid during World War II. Work a factory job making mess kits for soldiers and make a poster to support the war effort.
Each activity sheet contains four different activities for children to complete with their parent or caregiver at various locations throughout the museum.
Cost: $8 per child age 5 and up, $4 per adult, and free for children 4 and under. Parents must remain with their children at all times.
Pre-registration is required. Please call Rebecca Gross at (860) 236-5621 x232 or email education_assistant@chs.org to register or for more information, and you may also go to our website at chs.org/education/home-school-day/.
