Hello,
I am writing to you as a teacher at Kroka Expeditions, a wilderness school in Marlow, New Hampshire. This January, we will begin the journey across the state of Vermont for our twelfth annual Vermont Semester Program. We are currently looking for students, strong of will, of heart, and of the spirit of inquisition, to join us.
They will be joining a community of outstanding young people on an expedition of a lifetime – a 600-mile circumnavigation of Vermont by backcountry ski, white water canoe, rowboat and mountain bike! By living outdoors through the winter into the spring and summer, they will begin feeling the lasting connection with the living Earth. Carving skis through powder, canoeing fast river currents, pulling oars against the swells and skirting narrow mountain paths by bike they will learn adventure sports for a lifetime of exciting exploration. Working under the mentorship of expert guides and woodsmen they will practice wilderness living skills, largely forgotten by modern civilization. Living in a close-knit community of peers they will develop strong community ethics and leadership skills. They will become physically stronger, mature emotionally, and sharpen their observation abilities. They will acquire practical tools for sustainable living. They will receive high school credit in the areas of English, Social Studies, Natural Science, Math, Art and Physical Education. They will return with a stronger sense of self, prepared and excited to make a positive contribution to the world.
We recognize that this type of experience is especially well suited for young people who are being educated within the framework of homeschooling. We would appreciate it greatly if you could pass on information about the semester to any students who may be interested.
