Hi! We are very seriously considering homeschooling our high school sophomore son, starting this fall (nothing like waiting until the last minute). We moved from out of state and a really amazing school system, but have not found the system we are in able to accommodate our son's academic needs sufficiently. We were prepared to make the best of a not-great situation until we found out this week that he was not going to be able to take the classes he signed up for in the spring due to a 'scheduling conflict.' There is no recourse for us on this.
Our initial questions have to do with letting homeschool students participate on a part time basis in school classes (e.g. foreign language) and also if anyone has had success in getting their homeschooled child to be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities (e.g. drama productions, math team)? Our son was very active in extra curricular activities and we really want to make sure that he can still participate in something like that. We are investigating the community theater options in our area (Hebron), but are there homeschool competitive math teams, Model UN, robotics, or other clubs that we could be pointed in the direction of?
Our next question has to do with using community or state colleges to fill the academic needs of high school students. Our child has already taken one class at a college in math and is looking to take more/all of his classes at the college level. His ACT and SAT scores from freshman year demonstrate his readiness for classes at that level, and he aced his college math class. Despite that, we clearly were not prepared for early college this year, and that is why we are considering homeschooling for now, to give him the year to apply to schools and make sure that is what he wants to do. We are interested in finding other families pursuing a similar path for their high schoolers for support. Is there anything like that here?
Thanks so much in advance. We have homeschooled our children in the past, but did not think we would be going down this road again and are a bit anxious about making the leap.
