I have homeschooled all of my 4 children right through highschool, never having an issue with the school system but also keeping my distance. Now with my youngest I am having an issue because he wants to play highschool baseball. He plays Legion ball but evidently he is prohibited from play highschool ball because he's homeschooled. Public, magnet, charter and public schooled students are all welcome but not our student. CIAC along with our state makes these rules. I understand they want to make sure these kids are doing well in school and much like on my kids' college applications I am very capable of providing this information.
In February Mae Flexer will be introducing a bill to allow homeschool students who have interest in playing highschool sports to try out, as any other student would, at their local highschool. This bill would allow CT to join 22 other states in welcoming homeschool students to sports.
If any family has the interest in their children being able to play sports in highschool please contact your representatives so they can move this bill forward. I understand some parents concern that this would be another way for the state to try to control our families, but only the students who have interest would have to show proof of their schoolwork.
This bill would open up opportunity for those students who enjoy sports a means to participate and continue on their path to improving their skills in the sports they love.
Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.
